If they choose to integrate their store through Point of Sale, they can also have orders flow directly flow to their register or kitchen.
The delivery drivers that work for DoorDash are called Dashers. After the order is ready, the Dasher (driver) gets a notification on the app and can choose if they want to deliver the order. They get a guaranteed minimum amount of money for each delivery and can receive tips from the customers as another source of income.
In July 2019, DoorDash was accused of withholding tips given by customers to their delivery drivers. When a customer added a tip on top of the required amount, instead of it going directly to the driver, it first went to the company to cover the guaranteed minimum of the driver. Drivers then only received the part of the tip that exceeded the minimum payment. Due to this unethical business process, DoorDash faced a class-action lawsuit for a “materially false and misleading” tipping policy and ultimately was forced to pay a settlement of $2.5 million. DoorDash was also pressured to revise its policy after this altercation.
In April 2020, DoorDash was accused of using monopolistic power. DoorDash only listed restaurants on their app if the restaurant owners signed contracts that included clauses that require prices to be the same for dine-in customers as well as customers receiving delivery, This meant that the owners had to subsidize the cost of delivery fee from their end. DoorDash was also accused of charging an exorbitant amount of money from the restaurant owners for partnering with DoorDash. DoorDash charges 13 to 40% of the revenue which is quite an absurd amount considering the thin margins restaurants make which is about 3 to 9%.
Because of all these underlying controversies, DoorDash doesn’t seem like the perfect platform it advertises itself to be.
