We all know that Apple is really about a closed software ecosystem and the company practices are to stick to first-party services whenever possible. However, with iOS 14 (and iOS 14.5) they allowed users to change the default Browser, Mail client, and even Music app. But what about other important services people use on daily basis? Can you make Google Maps the default iPhone maps service? Nope, at least not fully. Learn what you can do below.
This workaround basically allows for interlinking between Google’s apps on iOS. A Google’s way to, in spite of limitations, unites their services on Apple’s closed platform. Basically, if you open an address from Gmail, there’s an option to choose whether it’ll navigate to Apple Maps or Google Maps. The same goes for web links and Safari or Chrome.
In general, it’s not possible to make Google Maps default on iOS 14 or prior versions. With the introduction of iOS 14, users are able to change the default mail client, browser, and music provider (after iOS 14.5). And that’s it. You can go for jailbreaking but that’s something we don’t recommend unless you are fully familiar with the procedure and its risks.
How do I set Google Maps as my default on my iPhone?
In Gmail for iOS, tap Settings from the menu, then choose Default apps. You can set Google Chrome to open when you tap on web links inside Gmail, and Google Maps to open when you follow map links, rather than Apple Safari and Apple Maps, respectively.
Your Android phone is probably set to open Google Maps by default whenever you click a location on your calendar or other apps, but it’s easy to switch to HERE. To change the default from Google Maps, open the settings on your phone, tap Apps, find Maps and then select Clear defaults.
How do I change the default map in iOS 14?
Unfortunately, you can’t set Google Maps as the universal default for navigation and mapping. That hasn’t changed with iOS 14, even though many apps already offer a user-adjustable setting to launch Google Maps or Apple Maps by default.
Zoom in or out: Double-tap and hold your finger to the screen, then drag up to zoom in or drag down to zoom out. Or, pinch open or closed on the map. The scale appears in the upper left while you’re zooming. To change the unit of distance, go to Settings > Maps, then select In Miles or In Kilometers.
