Can you map the nether?

Maps work in the Nether, although the map must be crafted in the Nether. Maps crafted in the Nether do not work in the Overworld, and vice versa. Maps made in the Nether will not display any terrain because the roof of the world is covered in bedrock rendering them useless.

Yes, but they dont do you much good. From the wiki:

You can break the ceiling of the Nether (although getting there is only safe in Creative), so if you break the ceiling the map might map out the actual landscape. I havent tried this, but I think it would work well.

So,if you are really lost, press F3 and make sure you travel close to the origin. Find a nether fortress, then drop all of your items in a chest. Die and go back to the fortress, but leave a trail of cobblestone. Take back your items and return to the overworld, following your trail.

The way to navigate through a Nether Fortress needs torches. When you finish a part of the Nether Fortress, put a torch at the entrance of the room. That will help you explore the Nether Fortress easily. Or you could block off the entrance with a certain block (like cobble). Related Question Answers

Beside above, can you use a compass in the nether? Usage. The compass needle points toward the world spawn point; more specifically, it will always point towards the northwest corner of the block whose coordinates are set as the world spawn. In the Nether or the End, the compass needle spins and points in random directions.
